The Mercedes F 015 Luxury in Motion is the newest development in the concept of autonomous driving.
It works by driving on a pre-programmed route, and although the car does not have the tools required in a self-driving vehicle – such as lasers and computers – Mercedes says there is more to the experience, as reported by The New York Times.
The dedicated team of experts from Mercedes-Benz have striven to give the car a feel of being in “a private retreat.”
“Anyone who focuses solely on the technology has not yet grasped how autonomous driving will change our society,” says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and also Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
“The car is growing beyond its role as a mere means of transport and will ultimately become a mobile living space.”
Other characteristics include a decor that looks like the interior of a living room. Furnishings include wood, carpeting and touch-enabled panels.
Additionally, with the touch of a button, the front seats can revolve to face the passengers sitting at the back. The car also features a touch-screen table that, once the front seats have been turned around, can be used by all four passengers.
The car features a manual mode, in which the vehicle is driven in the conventional manner with steering wheel and pedals, and an autonomous mode, where controls are administered through touch interface and gestures. The speed of the car can be increased or decreased by touch-screen panels that can be controlled by either of the passengers.
USA Today reported Holger Hutzenlaub, part of the company’s Advanced Design team, saying, “It will become the third place you will spend time, after your office and your home.
“In the future, when cities will be bigger and the chaos greater, the greatest luxury goods will be privacy and time.”
Although the F 015 incorporates an array of impressive and cutting-edge facets, traveling in a driver-less car might be uneasy for some. Since steering is self-governed and speed changes could surprise passengers, the drive may become quite discomforting.
