Maria Sharapova bids goodbye to her chance of winning another Roland Garros trophy this year.
The defending champion bowed to No. 13 seed, Lucie Safarova, in the fourth round, 7-6, 7-3, 6-4.
This was her first victory against the Russian who had a subdued play in the fourth round.
In an interview, Sharapova dismissed that an illness caused her bad performance. “I’m still a competitor no matter what.”
The Czech, 28, will face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the last eight. This will be Safarova’s first time in the Roland Garros quarter finals.
