Young daughter witnessed her father being attacked to death by a white shark while both dove for scallops at Lachlan Island in Tasmania’s East Coast, reports say. The incident happened past 7:00 a.m.
Police Inspector David Wiss from Tasmania told media the father and daughter went scallop diving on Saturday. While the daughter, on her 20s, returned to their boat, the father went underneath to dive for more.
When her 46-year-old father did not resurface, the daughter got worried and dove to check on her father. “She saw a very large shark and she saw her father being attacked by the shark,” the inspector narrated.
The daughter, according to the inspector, tried to get some help by “setting off a flare and making an emergency phone call.” Though there were immediate responders by boats nearby, the father was already fatally wounded.
“They pulled up the man using the air hose that he was attached to, but unfortunately, he was fatally injured,” Inspector Wiss was quoted by the news.
The man, whose name was withheld by the authorities, was survived by his wife and daughter, both of whom were traumatized, according to the police. Saturday’s deadly shark attack in Tasmanian was the fifth since 1959.
