3 Scenarios: Lebron James, Kevin Durant Lakers Super Team

Free agents LeBron James and Kevin Durant could form a Super Team with Lakers, according to analysts Stephen A Smith and Bill Simmons. Here are 3 scenarios:

Free agent superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant could form a Super Team in Los Angeles this summer, according to several analysts including Stephen A Smith and Bill Simmons.

The Lakers have 1) approximately $64 million (against a $94 million salary cap) to spend in free agency, 2) a handful of solid assets including the No. 2 pick in Thursday’s draft, and 3) the lure of the Purple & Gold.

James and Durant are on different paths. While Durant is still seeking his first championship, James is basking in the glory of bringing Cleveland its first major sports championship in over 50 years. But neither player is in a position to play with a team loaded with youngsters.

They’d want to take their collective talents to a championship contender. Let’s hypothecate over three different scenarios which would make the Lakers ‘relevant’ again:

# 1
Big 3 of LeBron James, Durant, CP3

  • Trade D’Angelo Russell and No. 2 Pick to Clippers for Chris Paul.
  • Sign LeBron James and Kevin Durant to $25 million each (lesser than max).
  • Free Agent Dwayne Wade takes a paycut to play with best friends James and Paul.
  • Trade Julius Randle and Nick Young to Sixers for Nerlens Noel
  • Let restricted free agent Jordan Clarkson walk

Rotation:

Chris Paul (22 million) / No. 32 Pick back-up PG (1 million)
Dwayne Wade (10 million) / Lou Williams (7 million)
Kevin Durant (25 million) / Anthony Brown (1 million)
LeBron James (25 million) / Larry Nance Jr. (1 million)
Nerlens Noel (4 million) / Tarik Black (1 million)

Payroll: $95 million
Note: Lakers would receive Noel’s Bird Rights

# 2
Big 4 of James, Durant, CP3, Cousins

  • Trade No. 2 Pick and Julius Randle to Sacramento for DeMarcus Cousins.
  • Sign LeBron James and Kevin Durant to $25 million each (lesser than max).
  • Trade D’Angelo Russell, Nick Young and Jordan Clarkson (sign-and-trade) to Clippers for Chris Paul.

Rotation:

Chris Paul (22 million) / No. 32 Pick back-up PG (1 million)
Lou Williams (7 million) / Room exception veteran
Kevin Durant (25 million) / Anthony Brown (1 million)
LeBron James (25 million) / Larry Nance Jr. (1 million)
DeMarcus Cousins (17 million) / Tarik Black (1 million)

Payroll: $100 million
Note: Lakers can go over the cap since they would acquire Cousins’ Bird Rights

# 3
Big 3 of James, Durant, Irving

  • Trade No. 2 Pick and D’Angelo Russell to Cleveland for Kyrie Irving.
  • Sign LeBron James and Kevin Durant to $25 million each (lesser than max).
  • Trade Lou Williams, Nick Young, Julius Randle and Larry Nance Jr for a top-15 pick, a second round pick and a future first rounder.
  • Sign Dwayne Wade (10 million)
  • Match offer sheets for Jordan Clarkson (Can go over the cap)
  • Sign Ian Mahimi (7 million)

Rotation:

Kyrie Irving (16 million) / Gary Payton II (1 million)
Dwayne Wade (10 million) / Jordan Clarkson (12 million)
Kevin Durant (25 million) / Anthony Brown (1 million)
LeBron James (25 million) / Thon Maker (1 million)
Ian Mahimi (7 million) / Diamond Stone (1 million)

Payroll: $99 million
Note: Lakers can over the cap to sign Jordan Clarkson. We presume that they draft Payton II and Stone with second round picks, Thon Marker with the No. 15 pick.

We’ve not included Carmelo Anthony in any potential scenarios because of his hefty contract and aging legs. The Lakers would find it easier to acquire Chris Paul’s contract and/or sign Dwayne Wade in free agency to give LeBron James the opportunity to play with his two best friends.

If any of these scenarios go down (never say never), it would be similar to when LeBron James joined hands with Chris Bosh and Wade in Miami to form a Super Team that made four consecutive finals and won two championships.

The most likely scenario? LeBron James stays back in Cleveland and Kevin Durant signs a two-year extension with Thunder. But if history has taught us anything, it’s wise not to conclude anything.

Another possibility!
