Lakers Rumors: The Los Angeles Lakers acquired point guard Jose Calderon from the Chicago Bulls earlier this month. However, the team is not done trading for players, per a source close to the organization.
According to Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders, the Lakers are patiently waiting for a star player to be made available via trade, seeing as many marquee players become free agents next year.
The likes of Gordon Hayward, Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul are all free agents next year. There is a feeling around the league that at least two or three of those players will be dealt before next year’s trade deadline, as a way for the incumbent teams to secure some assets.
“The team (Lakers) has held off on signing Tarik Black, Marcelo Huertas and second-overall pick Brandon Ingram, keeping an eye on what could be $13.6 million in cap room (assuming the team also waives and stretched Nick Young),” Pincus wrote on Thursday.
Lakers Rumors: Who is the mystery player?
Pincus added that Lakers GM Mitch Kucphak is biding his time and waiting to pull the trigger on a major trade. “The Lakers do have an unnamed trade target in mind, but are also preserving space for another opportunistic Calderon-like deal.”
Earlier this month, ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported that Russell Westbrook would join the Lakers in free agency next year if not traded to the club this year. The Lakers have an array of assets, the likes of D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Brandon Ingram, that would interest the rebuilding Oklahoma City Thunder.
Broussard wrote: “The Lakers think they can sign (Westbrook). I was talking to some people, some executives yesterday about possible trades they might do, or offer, and I was told they think they can sign him as a free agent. So, why should they give up anything?”
The Lakers signed Luol Deng, Timofey Mozgov in free agency but failed to attract the marquee names. Perhaps a trade is the best route to land their next superstar?
