Knicks Rumors: The New York Knicks acquired former MVP Derrick Rose via a blockbuster trade earlier in the summer but are still seeking back-up options to bolster their point guard rotation, per reports.
Since the Knicks gave up Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant as part of the Rose trade, there is a major hole in the point guard depth chart, with only injury-prone veteran Brandon Jennings available to back-up the former Chicago Bulls star.
According to Basketball Insiders, the Knicks front office is genuinely concerned about its backcourt options. “The only other point guard on the roster (besides Derrick Rose) with a guaranteed contract for next season is Brandon Jennings, who is also working his way back from a serious injury.
“He tore his Achilles on January 24th of 2014. He returned to game action in late December of last year, averaging 6.9 points (on below 37% shooting) and 3.5 assists in the 48 games he appeared in,” writes Tommy Bear.
Jennings, 26, hasn’t been healthy since the 2013-14 season when he appeared in 80 games for the Detroit Pistons. Since then, he played 41 games in 2014-15 and 68 games in 2015-16 (for the Pistons and Orlando Magic).
There’s also been a major production drop-off in the one time borderline all-star. After being traded to Orlando, Jennings averaged 7 points and 4.0 assists while coming off the bench.
Thunder Rumors: Gordon Hayward To Replace Kevin Durant?
Knicks Rumors: Mario Chalmers or Norris Cole?
New York signed undrafted prospects Chasson Randle and Ron Baker to training camp contracts following their impressive performances in the Las Vegas Summer League. However, it’s highly unlikely that either of them makes the final 15-man roster ahead of the new season.
The Knicks have 14 players under guaranteed contracts for the 2016-17 season. It’s almost a given that the final roster spot would go to a back-up point guard.
According to the Insiders report, the likes of Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole, Kirk Hinrich, Steve Blake, Nate Robinson, Jordan Farmar, Andre Miller and Lance Stephenson (typically a wing/forward) are being viewed as possible options.
