Kevin Durant has yet to accept the New York Knicks’ invite for a free agency meeting. However, that hasn’t stopped Carmelo Anthony from selling the merits of the Big Apple to the former MVP.
Durant’s camp is scheduled to meet six teams over the weekend – Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers and Miami Heat.
”I’m with KD now; he’s right downstairs. We’ve been together. We’ve been talking,” Anthony told ESPN in an interview Monday, before stressing it doesn’t matter if the Knicks get a face-to-face meeting with the superstar forward. “I do consider myself part of the Knicks…so that meeting has already taken place.”
Kevin Durant in N.Y. for Olympics team…
Durant and Anthony are currently in New York for the unveiling of the 12-man squad that will represent the United States at the Summer Olympics in Rio. Anthony has used the time wisely, trying to pitch Durant on the Knicks few days before free agency officially opens on July 1.
Kevin Durant Free Agency: Hometown Washington To Be Snubbed
Anthony insisted that the impending free agency wasn’t the reason for hanging out with Durant. “We’re friends. We hang out. It’s magnified now because he’s a free agent and we’re in New York. But last year nobody was talking about us hanging out, going to work out or going to dinner or things like that. So, yeah, those conversations do come up.”
Technically, the NBA could take issue to premature agency recruiting pitches since free agency doesn’t officially start until 12:01 a.m. on Friday. However, the league can’t intervene when two friends hang out when in the same town. “Melo has been my friend since I have been in high school. We talk about everything. That is like my big brother right there. The best thing about all of us, none of the guys here have put any type of pressure. It has been cool,” Durant said when asked about the meeting.
Should New York Knicks hold their breath for Kevin Durant? Or must they target other free agents in the offseason? The next 10 days or so should be intriguing.
