Kanye West insists he will never allow the media to dictate his actions. He said he does not want to be liked.
Kanye West’s set during a concert in Manila, Philippines on Sunday night was one of his most personal and most telling yet. According to Independent UK, in a freestyle akin to that of 808s & Heartbreak’s “Pinocchio Story,” West performed an introspective, piano-backed verse that demonstrated how he feels about the media, God, and himself.
“I don’t want to be liked” he sang repeatedly, before adding, “If I gotta be like what everyone else be like, then I don’t wanna be liked.” He went on and sang, “I would rather follow God than follow the media / I would rather follow God than follow perception / Because most artists aren’t appreciated in their own time / So the more I’m disliked the better I must be doing”.
The freestyle ultimately morphed into the chorus of “Runaway.” On the same night, he also insisted he is responsible for Taylor Swift’s celeb status, regardless if this can cause another backlash against him.
Even though his song “Famous” got him flak for the lyrics “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that b**ch famous,” this did not stop him from singing the song to the Manila crowd. He even provided the explanation why he wrote those offensive lyrics.
According to ET, West told the audience that the controversial song is the song that “broke the writer’s block” for him. It is something he wanted to say but was prevented from doing so.
He went on to say, “That night when I went on stage was the beginning of the end of my life,” referring to the night he went up on stage and grabbed the mic from Swift while she was giving her acceptance speech. He had said that Beyonce should have been the one awarded. Young Swift was shocked at what he did then.
Swift, of course, did not let this incident ruin her. She went on to become one of the most awarded singers to date.
West, however, said that by speaking the truth, his career took a turn for the worse. He claimed that Lady Gaga cancelled their joint tour the day after the controversial VMAs 2009. According to him, he has to fight daily for the rest of his life because the world turned against him for being so vocal of his feelings.
He continued to say that it is the work of a true artist to verbalize feelings. It is not about anything but the truth. He ended his speech saying that the fans’ response to the song meant a lot to him.
