He is 30 and ambitious to say the least. Even without any prior experience serving in an elected position, Jon Ossoff has decided to run as a congressman for Georgia’s sixth district. He is a conservative Democrat on a mission to take on President Donald Trump. That is exactly why he is running on the platform, “Make Trump Furious.”
It was back in January when Ossoff announced that he will be running as a candidate for the Sixth Congressional District Special Election this coming spring. From the very beginning, supporters immediately lined up behind him, securing as much as $250,000 in financial commitments from various supporters upon declaring his candidacy. To date, he has already received as much as $3 million in campaign donations.
As for support, Ossoff has had been receiving a lot too. Early on, he got the backing of U.S. Reps. John Lewis and Hank Johnson.
Ossoff wants to ‘Make Trump Furious.’
The strength of his campaign is the platform, “Make Trump Furious.” Nonetheless, Ossoff has made it clear that he doesn’t really mention Trump in all the speeches that he delivers. “I’m not campaigning across the district talking about Donald Trump at every event,” Ossoff explained. He is aware that there are many in his district who believe that Trump “may embarrass” the American people globally and that he may be both “incompetent” and “dishonest.”
“I share those concerns, but by running a positive campaign focused on core American values, the contrast is obvious,” he remarked.
Ossoff is a man who has lived in Georgia all his life. In fact, he grew up in the Sixth district itself, and has been quite active in the political scene. Previously, he served a senior national security staffer for the U.S. Congress. At the same time, he is also a CEO of a company that produces documentaries on both political corruption and organized crime. Ossoff also has a degree from the London School of Economics where he had specialized in the trade relations between the U.S. and China.
According to a report from The New York Times, Ossoff is currently running against 11 Republican candidates. He is actually running in a district where Republicans have ruled for some time. His candidacy would be the first test on whether the Democrats can turn the tide. The party is also hoping it can soon recapture the 24 seats needed in order to take the House back.
Recent poll shows a head-to-head battle between Ossoff and Republican candidates Karen Handel and Bob Grey, according to 11alive.com. The poll was made by Trafalgal Group, a private poll entity that reported some victory for Donald Trump back in November. The report leads to a pdf uploaded on Google Drive which you can access by clicking this link.
Democratic House leader Stacey Adams has also recently endorsed Ossoff. In Ossoff’s campaign website, Adams was quoted saying “We must unify behind Jon today and invest in his campaign like our lives depend on it.”
The endorsement addresses the importance of rallying behind a nominee who promises to battle “fear, division, and extremism.”
