Iman Shumpert, the Cleveland Cavaliers guard, helped his fiancée deliver a baby girl in the confines of a bathroom early on Wednesday morning. Shumpert’s fiancée, musician Teyana Taylor, announced the news on her Instagram account earlier today.
The birth came three weeks ahead of the expected delivery date of January 16, 2016, which the Cavaliers player had previously shared on his Facebook account.
The baby, named Iman Tayla Shumpert Jr., was born at 6:42 a.m., according to the Instagram post that immediately went viral over the last 24 hours. The happy couple has nicknamed the baby “Junie.”
Taylor explained in his post that she wasn’t aware of the fact that she was in labor, until she felt the baby’s head. She revealed that in a desperate scenario, Shumpert was forced to use a pair of headlines to tie the umbilical cord as the celebrity couple waited for paramedics to arrive. Desperate times call for desperate measures!
Iman Shumpert, who missed Thursday night’s game against Oklahoma City Thunder with a persisting groin strain, had proposed to the musician back in November.
David Blatt, the Cavaliers coach, said that Shumpert’s status for future games is still uncertain. “Due to the recent events, we’ve allowed Shump to do more important things (like take care of his family),” Blatt said earlier on Thursday. “The doctor will get his hands on him, hopefully, (Thursday) evening. Then we’ll be a little bit smarter (on his status). But he’ll be down for a few days for sure,” added Blatt, who congratulated Shumpert for the birth of his first child.
Blatt even cracked a joke about Iman Shumpert’s delivery skills! “Dr. Shumpert now. And congratulations to Teyana, as well,” the second year Cavs coach said with a chuckle.

On Dec 16th at 6:42am in our bathroom Junie decided she wanted to take her first breath into this world. She came out as a wonderful surprise to everyone! Not knowing I was in labor until I felt her head…it took two ten count pushes with my fiancé playing Dr and she entered this world into his bare hands! Eyes full of tears and barely able to speak to the emergency operator @imanshumpert tied a pair of red headphones around the umbilical cord and the ambulance made there grand entrance 5 min later.
