Holly Holm has become a household name in a matter of weeks. On a whirlwind media tour since knocking out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, Holm hasn’t shied away from reciting embarrassing tales.
The 34-year-old kickboxer was in attendance for Saturday night’s Canelo Alvarez-Miguel Cotto fight in Las Vegas. She was introduced to boxing legends Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, along with music couple Jay Z and Beyoncé.
Holm, the new UFC bantamweight champion, told KRQE News that she “put her foot in her mouth” at a VIP party hosted by the famous couple. “I meet Jay Z and he says ‘this is my wife’ and I say ‘oh hi what is your name?’ That is what I do when I meet someone’s wife. As I am shaking her hand I am thinking ‘why did I just say that… why did I just say that. It’s Beyoncé.’ And Jay Z’s asking me about the fight and I can’t even focus on what he’s saying because I just put my foot in my mouth.”
Holm continued, “And I literally have to interrupt him, I’m like ‘I’m really sorry.’ And I go back to Beyoncé and I’m like ‘Beyoncé, I can’t believe I just did that.’ She goes ‘oh no it’s fine.’”
Clearly, Holm knew who Beyoncé was and apologized promptly. Beyoncé told her to relax.
This was just another night in the life of Holly Holm. “My life has changed a little bit. Hopefully everything will be somewhat normal at home,” concluded the former world boxing champion.
Holm hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is hoping for a normal life back home but reports suggest that the town is anticipating her return.
