HLN anchor Yasmin Vossoughian and the rest of the staff proved to be professional when they finished up an interview with Jon Hendren even though it was obvious that the Twitter comedian was trolling. Were they really clueless that they got trolled?
Hendren was asked to participate in the show as an Edward Snowden supporter. He talked about Edward Scissorhands instead. Surprisingly, the interview was not cut off air.
Hendren told Mashable that he was called in 15 minutes before he was on. He said he had no idea what the specific questions were going to be or even the format.
Speaking with Esquire, Hendren said that his last tweet about Snowden was a couple of years ago, back in June 2013. “Edward Snowden is being hunted by the government while bankers who sabotaged the economy are free,” he tweeted at the time.
Hendren told Esquire he was surprised that the show did not cut him off immediately. “So I just kept rolling with it assuming at some point they’d hang up, and they never did for some reason,” he said. The whole interview was done and “the producer came over the call and said ‘Thanks, we’re clear,’ and hung up,” Hendren shared. “It just sounded like a business as usual on their end,” he added.
The hardcore trolling took place after a John Oliver clip was shown. Here is the conversation between Vossoughian and Hendren:
Vossoughian: “There is classified information out there that John Oliver was referring to that was released that could have feasibly harmed people.”
Hendren: “Well, you know, to say that he couldn’t harm somebody with what he did – he could, absolutely, he could. But to cast him out, to make him invalid in society simply because he has scissors for hands – I mean, that’s strange. People didn’t get scared until he strated sculpting shrubs into dinosaurs shapes and whatnot.”
Vossoughian: “Now, Snowden’s living in Russia. Some people say it’s hypocritical that Snowden has asylum in Russia. Russia has a lot of human rights violations.”
Vossoughian: “But what about the choice he made to live in a country like Russia?”
Hendren: “I mean, where else is he going to go? You know? We cast him out. We got scared when he poked a hole in waterbed with his scissor fingers, and that was unreasonable of us.”
Vossoughian: “Wee, Jon, I appreciate you giving us your opinion.”
