Taylor Swift has revealed that her mother has cancer.
“I hope and pray that you never get news like this,” ends a letter she wrote for her fans.
The singer has narrated how she urged her mother, Andrea, to get herself checked up for Christmas. Results came in, and Swift’s family found out the bad news soon after.
According to her letter, which she posted on Tumblr, Swift wanted to keep her mother’s condition private, but Andrea disagreed, saying she wanted her daughter’s fans to know how important it is for their parents to also get themselves checked for any illnesses.
“She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor,” Taylor wrote, “and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle.”
As a result, Andrea will not be able to watch her daughter in many of her shows for an upcoming tour.
On April 9, health reporter Julia Belluz criticized Swift’s urging of her fans about cancer screening, citing on the platform Vox that “some cancer screenings may actually do more harm than good,” as well as a South Korean study in the New England Journal of Medicine.
“These are diagnoses that turned healthy people into cancer patients unnecessarily,” Belluz wrote, “leading them to unnecessary treatment and hospitalization, creating clubs of ‘cancer survivors’ who actually would have lived even if their cancers were left in them.”
