“Star Wars” space hero Han Solo is going to get his own film. The announcement was made official by Walt Disney Co. The release is scheduled on May 2018.
Han Solo fans still have to wait for a long time, but they will be rewarded by “Lego Movie” directors, who have already started preliminary work on the flick.
Walt Disney have started to roll out projects for “Star Wars” series with the announcement of “Rogue One,” scheduled next year; hence, the Han Solo project will be the second stand-alone in the anthology.
These stand-alone films will concentrate on a slightly different part of the universe and will focus more on the personal life of the characters and how they made it to their present situation.
The first Han Solo film will highlight the origin story of the character, played by Harrison Ford.
Ford will play the same role in the upcoming December release of “The Force Awakens.”
As revealed by Disney, the story of the newly announced project will concentrate on how young Solo became the smuggler and scoundrel of Rebel Alliance, encountered by Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi at the Mos Eisley.
The casting of the film or the name of the new project has not been announced yet, but it has been confirmed that Chris Miller and Phil Lord, best known for their projects like “Lego Movie” and the popular Fox TV series “The Last Man on Earth,” will direct the film.
Miller and Lord have openly accepted that the new project will be no doubt a challenge and a risk, but they love to bring something fresh to the audience. The screenplay of the film will be penned by writer-director Lawrence Kasdan along with his son Jon.
Walt Disney bought the franchise of “Star Wars” from Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 billion and the upcoming “The Force Awakens” will be the first release of the trilogy from Disney.
