A guard at the U.S. Census Bureau headquarters in Suitland, Maryland was shot on the chest on Thursday night. He was immediately rushed to the hospital but has died.
The shooting took place at around 6:15 p.m., confirmed Mark Brady, spokesman for Prince George’s County Fire Department.
The gunman was already shot by police.
At first, sources did not divulge any further information about the guard shot at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters but only confirmed the incident.
“There has been an incident at the Suitland Federal Center and there is an ongoing investigation,” a tweet said. “We are committed to the safety of all staff who work at the Census Bureau and are currently making sure that everyone is safe and secure. We will provide more details as they become available.”
The FBI is looking into the matter. Opened in 2006, the Census Bureau headquarters has a strength of over 5,000 permanent employees, according to NBC Washington.
Reports said loud bangs rang inside the parking garage around the same time when the guard was shot, but it is not yet clear whether it came from guns or from police grenades.
