DeMarcus Cousins to the Golden State Warriors might not be as farcical as you think. There are a handful of sensible reasons why Boogie could end up in the Bay Area in two years’ time.
Cousins will be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2018. If the Sacramento Kings fail to build a high-quality team around him, he may consider chasing titles elsewhere.
The best bandwagon in the league is undoubtedly the one in Golden State. It is unlikely that the team’s core group will be dismantled any time in the near future.
Klay Thompson and Draymond Green will still be on guaranteed contracts with the Dubs when Cousins hit the free agency market in 2018. Stephen Curry will be an unrestricted free agent next summer, but he will likely re-sign with the team in a heartbeat. If things go well next season, Kevin Durant could also agree to a multi-year extension.
Financially, Curry and Durant’s contracts provide flexibility for the Warriors front office. This is leverage they can use to potentially sign a fifth superstar in the future. It can be remembered that Curry’s contract paved the way for the Warriors to sign Durant.
Carlos Murillo of Blue Man Hoop noted that Cousins can be very hostile and emotional. It doesn’t help that the Kings are in total disarray.
Cousins continues to shine despite the team’s ineptitude. If he wants to win and have fun doing so, GSW is just the squad for him. He will also have more exposure and endorsements while playing for a winning organization. Joining the Warriors will be a great business venture for a budding superstar like him.
On the technical side of things, Steve Kerr’s offense fits Cousins’ game perfectly. The 6-foot-11 center is by no means a great three-point shooter, but he is good enough to force defenses to guard him from deep. Cousins will have more open looks if he plays for the Warriors. Additionally, his presence will add a new dynamic to the team’s offense.
The main reason why Cousins would join the Warriors is that he has an affinity to their young nucleus. He has already forged a strong friendship with Curry and Thompson. This summer, he has gotten to know Durant and Green even more as they join forces to help Team USA win gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
