A Vatican top diplomat described Ireland’s gay marriage referendum as a defeat for humanity. His statement now puts pressure on Vatican’s decision involving France’s nomination of a gay ambassador to the Holy See.
Ireland gay marriage defeats humanity
“This result left me feeling very sad… the Church will have to take this reality on board in the sense of a renewed and strengthened evangelisation. I believe that we are talking here not just about a defeat for Christian principles but also about a defeat for humanity,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin was quoted as saying by various media networks. His statement was made during the Centesimus Annus conference in the Vatican.
Parolin’s statement draw attention to the impending decision Vatican has to make involving France’s nomination of an openly gay ambassador to the Holy See, Laurent Stefanini. According to various media reports coming from France and Italy, the Vatican has denied his nomination because of him being gay.
Parolin said a dialogue between the Holy See and France regarding Stefanini is still ongoing, The Guardian reported. The cardinal hoped that officials would come to a decision in a “positive manner.” The official nomination will be posted soon on Vatican’s official bulletin, The Guardian has learnt.
Ireland gay marriage referendum defeats the church
Ireland’s gay marriage referendum poses “a challenge for the whole Church” and creates a big gap “between society and the church,” the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano said in its headline.
“The margin between the ‘yes’ and the ‘no’ votes was too large not to be accepted as a defeat. It was the result of high voter turnout, notably among young people,” the newspaper stated as told by RTE News.
The referendum favoring same sex marriage is hard to understand, said Cardinal George Cottier. He said it is especially jarring to allow same sex marriage “without taking into account the pedophilia scandal which has rocked the Irish Church.”
