“Game of Thrones” fans who have read the novels knows that Catelyn Stark was resurrected in the form of Lady Stoneheart. This plot has yet to be explored in the TV adaptation but now that might change especially after the last episode.
The fifth episode began with Sansa Stark confronting Littlefinger about her suffering in the hands of the Boltons. After seeing that he can no longer smooth talk his way into an alliance with the Starks, he leaves but not before telling her news regarding Riverrun.
Her great-uncle, Brynden “The Blackfish” Tully, has gathered the remnants of the Tully forces and has retaken the seat of House Tully from the Freys. With the surviving river lords resenting House Frey for their treachery, this bold move could strengthen the position of the former Lords of the Trident.
In a report by TIME, Sophie Turner already revealed the possibility after the premiere of season 6 when she and the other actors played two truths and a lie. On one of her answers, she tells them that the resurrected Catelyn Tully will return.
So where does Lady Stoneheart return to fit in the picture? After Littlefinger brought up the events at Riverrun, the stage is set for her return. Currently, House Tully is leaderless with The Blackfish only being a capable commander but lacking in the field of politics.
In the novels, her resurrection is carried out by Beric Donarrion and Thoros of Myr at the cost of Beric’s life. After they formed the Brotherhood without Banners to protect the smallfolk of the River Lands, chances are they are still within the area in the current season of “Game of Thrones.”
According to Watchers on the Wall, Thoros of Myr is expected to return this season and possibly Beric will do so as well. Why is he returning? The show can very well go on with them in the background unless they are part of a big game changer in the story such as resurrecting Lady Stark.
The latter half of the series will inevitably show scenes from Riverrun as House Tully is being considered by Jon Snow and Sansa Stark as potential allies in their war with the Boltons. It will be quite a surprise should they see Catelyn Tully alive and well and commanding the Tully Forces.
After the so many surprising revelations in “Game of Thrones,” Lady Stoneheart returning isn’t a very far-fetched idea considering that it is in the books. Most of the conditions for her appearance are already in place all that is needed in for HBO to carry it out.
