Filming is currently underway for Game of Thrones Season 7 which means rumors and theories are once again on the table. The latest concerns the last surviving character with the blood of House Baratheon: Gendry.
We last saw him rowing westwards from Dragonstone to escape the clutches of Melisandre. With the death of Stannis in Season 5, House Baratheon is de facto extinct with only a bastard to hold on to.
According to Screen Rant, an eagle-eyed fan snapped a photo of Joe Dempsie, who plays Gendry, in Belfast. Could this mean that we will finally see the poor bastard come ashore after a few season’s worth of rowing?
Gendry Returning In Game Of Thrones Season 7?
Judging from the show’s recent history, actors and actresses who were gone from the show reappeared after they were spotted on the set. This is given that they are still alive of course.
Rory McCann (The Hound), Natalia Tena (Osha), and Art Parkinson (Rickon Stark) all returned to Game of Thrones after they were spotted at last season’s set. If this is the case, we just might see the Bastard of Baratheon in one of next season’s seven episodes.
But what could his return possibly do for a show which is clearly entering its end game. Gendry is hardly a main character in the story nor is he a powerful lord.
Even if he does return to be the new head of House Baratheon, the Stormlands have no military strength to speak of. His character will be next to useless when Daenerys’ army lands not to mention when the White Walkers arrive.
The only logical way Gendry will make a difference is if he reunites with Arya Stark. He could serve as a love interest or an accomplice, either way Gendry as a character will be out of place unless he is with Arya.
Of course Dempsie could be just visiting the set to catch up with former colleagues and has no plans to return. However this is Game of Thrones we’re talking about, we should expect more surprises when the series returns on 2017.
