Day 10 updates from Roland Garros is here.
The day at Rolland Garros saw the greatest upset as 17-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer bowed out to his good friend Stan Wawrinka in straight sets. Federer lost 6-4 6-3 7-6. The 33-year-old’s only title at Roland Garros came in 2009. Last year’s Australian Open champion hit 43 winners to overcome Federer’s challenge for the first time in Grand Slams. For the first time in his career, he failed to break in a Grand Slam match.
Wawrinka will now face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals.
Tsonga edged U.S. Open finalist 5th seed Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-4 4-6 3-6 6-3. The match was stopped for 30 minutes after a horizontal metal sheet detached from a score-board of Philippe-Chatrier stadium and landed on the stands.
In the women’s singles, experience prevailed over youth as 2008 Champion Ana Ivanovic defeated Elina Svitolina 6-3 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Lucie Safarova also reached the semis blowing Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.
