In this FIBA ASIA 2015 update, we’ll see how Gilas Pilipinas bounced back from their surprise defeat from first-timer, Palestine, yesterday.
Title aspirants Philippines were stunned in their opener by debutante Palestine on Wednesday. On Thursday Gilas Pilipinas bounced back in style by crushing Hong Kong 101-50.
Jayson Castro, Andray Blatche, Terrence Romeo and Dondon Honteveros, all great names, feature in the Filipino team and led the side to notch their first win in the championship. Once they have tasted blood, fans can expect Gilas to win the Rio Olympic berth they’re aiming for. Hong Kong also started their campaign at China with an emphatic win over Kuwait.
The Philippines opened the game with a 12-0 blast. Morning showed the day, as all the big names fired cylinders and their defense restricted the Hong Kong side to just 30 percent shooting from the field.
Hero of the game: Jayson Castro
Well, he was not at his best against Palestine. Castro proved his class on Thursday, leading his side from the front in a must-win situation.
He rounded up proceedings with 21 points in under 20 minutes, shooting 7-of-9 from the floor, including 5 triples. The hero of the game also bagged rebounds, dished out 2 assists, and got 2 steals.
“Coach Tab Baldwin asked me to take over for this game,” Castro said to international media. “In the first game, my job was to distribute (the ball) and it didn’t work out.”
Gilas faces Kuwait on Friday, as Hong Kong faces Palestine.
