Gilas Pilipinas are one game away from replicating their feat of the last edition of FIBA Asia Championship, where they won a silver medal after bowing down to Iran in the finals. A much-accomplished side this time is hungry for the gold medal as they take on Japan on Friday night in the semifinals. A gold medal would seal an Olympic berth for the Gilas, the first time since 1972.
Gilas played Japan in the second phase of the group stage in this edition. Tab Baldwin’s team, struggling to get back to form in that phase managed to edge past Japan 73-66 in a low-scoring match. Philippines found their desired rhythm and confidence after beating Iran in a crunch encounter in the next game. The team is cruising since then in the tournament.
Now they are up against Japan once again on Friday, October 2 in the semifinals.
Reigning champions Iran will take on hosts China in the other semifinals.
Japan, ranked 47 by FIBA, has resurrected their basketball in this edition of the tournament under coach Kenji Hasegawa.
