After Facebook discovered that its “trending” news module was curated and tweaked by humans, the company fired editors then created algorithms to do their jobs instead.
According to The Guardian, the fully automated trending module of the company facilitated a fake story about Fox News host Megyn Kelly, followed by an article about a comedian’s attack on Ann Coulter, as well as links to a video of a man masturbating using a chicken sandwich from McDonald’s.
The former employee of the company also said that workers suppressed stories about the right-wing CPAC gathering, Mitt Romney, Rand Paul, and more. They would conceal conservative topics from appearing in highly-influential section. However, these stories might be organically trending among the site’s users.
The whole censorship of conservative stories made the company a subject of a Congressional investigation as well as an internal investigation.
Adding to the revelation, an anonymous employee for the social networking company spilled the beans in a interview with Digiday. The employee said that there were things in the Gizmodo article that are accurate.
“Ninety percent of the team identified as liberal, including the copy editors, who essentially had the final approval on topics,” the employee said.
“If a source came up that may have been less credible to a liberal reviewer — like Breitbart or another publication like that — it would require more extensive secondary sourcing.”
The former trending news worker from Facebook also said that whenever there was an article from a publication that sympathized with liberals, it was given significantly less critique and “was a more viable topic from the get-go.”
