Manchester United already signed Bayern Munich’s star central midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. And now they have set Schweinsteiger’s teammate Robert Lewandowski as their new target. The English Premiership giants have already spent over £70 million on new signings this off-season.
The Polish striker is expected to partner with Wayne Rooney upfront if he lands at Old Trafford. United has released Colombian striker Radamel Falcao and another striker Robin Van Persie has also left for Turk side Fenerbahce. Paris Saint Germain star Edinson Cavani is also in coach Louis Van Gaal’s radar.
The 26-year-old hitman can score 30 goals a season in England but would only leave Bayern if they asked him to, according to his agent.
“I think it would have to be a very high offer, definitely higher than €50m,” agent Cezary Kucharski said on Polish television.
“Robert is one of the most valued strikers on the market who guarantees goals, guarantees assists, excitement. He has shown that over many years during his career.
“Every year he is an even better player and plays at a higher level and that is very important for other clubs because he has credibility and guarantees at least 30 goals a season.”
Lewandowski has scored 17 times in 30 appearances for Bayern Munich after joining the club from Dortmund in 2014. Kucharski also clarified his client would only consider the move if the Bavarian side suggested it.
“There must be a signal from the club, from Munich,” Kucharski added. “There is no such signal so we are not thinking about it, because even thinking about a change of club would be unfair in my opinion to the current employers.”
United has already sealed a deal with Italian defender Matteo Darmian worth £12.7 million. Memphis Depay will be donning the Red devil’s shirt for £25 million. Schweinsteiger’s transfer fee was £15 million, Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, too, signed in their favor for £24 million yesterday. All these signing have taken the cumulative expenditure to £76.7 million this summer.
Coach Van Gaal is still looking to rope in Spanish superstar Sergio Ramos as No 1 centre-back for next season after the club unloaded record-signing Angelo Di Maria.
