Manchester United has overtaken Liverpool in the race to snatch Christian Benteke from Aston Villa. After the departure of strikers Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao, United is eager to add strikers in their roster.
Coach Louis Van Gaal has already added Matteo Darmian, Memphis Depay, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin in his kitty for next season, but the club is yet to fill up the vacancy in their forward line, especially after Van Persie’s move to Fenerbahce.
Liverpool too was chasing Benteke, but are reluctant to dole out the £32.5 million buyout clause in Benteke’s contract, which gives the Old Trafford Outfit an edge over signing Benteke. The Belgian international has made clear his determination to leave Villa Park this summer. According to some sources, Liverpool still remains favorites to sign Benteke. United hasn’t yet contacted Aston Villa over the Benteke issue. But the Midlands club are reportedly fearful that Benteke could seal his move to Old Trafford as early as this weekend. Benteke has also hinted about his future move to join the Premiership giants in Twitter.
The 24-year-old is currently out with Villa on their pre-season tour to the Algarve, Portugal.
