West Bromwich Albion pulled of a stunning win in the Premiership on Sunday by beating Manchester United 1-0 at Hawthorns. The Red Devils were reduced to ten men when Juan Mata was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the 26th minute.
United, who displayed signs of bouncing back after making a disastrous start in this season by winning three on a row including the high-voltage Premiership encounter with Arsenal few days back, now slipped to the sixth place of league table following the loss.
The match was confined in the midfield in the first half hour as neither teams could find fluidity in their attacks. Spaniard Juan Mata picked up the double-booking within a span of three minutes. With only ten players left, United conceded the control of the game to West Brom. The hosts started to dominate and Craig Dawson’s volley narrowly missed United’s goal in the 28th minute, according to Soccer Laduma.
David De Gea kept the Red Devil’s citadel intact by pulling off a superb save from Saido Berahino’s powerful shot. West Brom took the lead as Salomon Rondon netted his fourth goal in the last six league games, taking advantage of the poor covering by the United defenders. He took time to control the ball before shooting home from 12 yards giving De Gea no chance.
The 10-men Manchester United team failed to conjure up anything in response and slipped to the sixth place in the league table, three points behind fourth placed Manchester City, according to The Gulf Times. The Old Trafford outfit now has 47 points, and has played one game more than City. The loss derailed Louis Van Gaal’s men from the track of a top-four finish in this edition of Premiership.
Albion climbed to the 11th spot with 39 points. West Brom had to wait for 32 long years to taste blood against the crowd favorite in the Premiership.
