Louis Van Gaal isn’t happy or complacent despite his side’s 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. Manchester United are strong contenders for the title, having topped the group currently in the UEFA Champions League. But the Dutch wants more “pace on the wings.”
The United boss wants cover for Luke Shaw, who’s recovering from a broken leg. Shaw won’t feature in the United lineup for a long time.
Jesse Lingard has scored his first goal for United on Saturday. This was the 22-year-old winger’s second start and seventh outing in the season. He also starred in United’s win against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League group encounter.
Juan Mata doubled the lead in the dying moments by converting a spot kick. The Red Devils currently have 24 points from 12 matches and are on the 4th place in league standings.
Van Gaal pointed out that more speed and creativity is required in the wings for his game-plan to succeed. Lingard isn’t as nippy as he expected him to be. “I have said already in my first year many times we need speed and creativity on the wings. You have seen that now we play with Jesse Lingard and he is not the most speedy winger in the world, and Juan Mata is also not the most speedy winger in the world.
“So we must first [address] that problem and then we can see how we play and how we are in balance with playing with speedy wingers.”
The United boss is looking forward to the January transfer window to infuse fresh blood in the wings. Most of the United stars will leave for an international break this week.
