On Sunday, television actress and widow of legendary Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows, passed away at her home in Encino, California. Jayne was 95.
According to Variety, the actress was nominated thrice in the Emmy Awards. The first of these was for a 1977 episode of “Meeting of Minds,” where she played Catherine the Great; the second for a 1987 episode of “St. Elsewhere,” where she featured as Olga Osoranski; and the third in 1996 for her role as Alice Morgan in “High Society.”
She remained an integral part of the film and television industry, and has been well known for her roles in “Fantasy Island,” “The Love Boat,” and “Undercurrent,” as reported by Yahoo.
Meadows first appeared on Broadway in a comedy, “Spring Again,” in 1941. This was followed by a string of Broadway appearances, including “Another Love Story” (1943), “Many Happy Returns” (1945), and “Kiss Them for Me” (1945), as per The New York Times.
She met Allen, who she married in 1954, when she appeared as a panelist on the game show, “I’ve Got a Secret.” She partnered with Allen on several talk shows.
They were together until Allen’s demise in 2000.
Her last appearance was in August 2009, where she appeared at the Early TV Memories First-Class Commemorative Stamp Dedication Ceremony.
In a statement, Bill Allen, her son who is also the president and CEO of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., said, “She was not only an extraordinarily gifted actress who could move audiences from laughter to tears and back again all in one scene, but she was the greatest storyteller I have ever known and I will miss her endlessly fascinating and frequently hilarious anecdotes about her life and the many brilliantly talented people she worked with and befriended along the way. She was also the most loving mother and grandmother I could ever imagine, seeing only the best in all her family members and giving us all confidence that we had value to offer the world and should take risks because we could do no wrong in her eyes. She will be sorely missed and never forgotten.”
