Emma Watson has been named in the database that includes the details of the Panama Papers leak.
The actress is known for playing the role of Hermione Granger in the massively popular Harry Potter film series.
Watson’s name was discovered in the searchable database, which contains in excess of 200,000 offshore companies, by the UK’s Spectator magazine.
Watson, as reflected in the leaks from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, has been found to be a beneficiary in an offshore company in the British Virgin Islands, as reported by NEWS.com.au.
The publication notes that forming an offshore company is not unlawful, and that the inclusion of one’s name in the leaks is not indicative of any criminal activity. However, the same can be used to conceal money from authorities.
Watson’s spokesman said that she “like many high-profile individuals, set up an offshore company for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety.”
“UK companies are required to publicly publish details of their shareholders and therefore do not give her the necessary anonymity required to protect her personal safety, which has been jeopardised in the past owing to such information being publicly available,” her spokesman said, as reported by the Independent.
“Offshore companies do not publish these shareholder details. Emma receives absolutely no tax or monetary advantages from this offshore company whatsoever — only privacy.”
Watson’s name in the leaks comes after the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists published data on their website on Monday. Companies, trusts and foundations have been included in the database.
The database in the Panama Papers leak is the biggest about offshore companies to have been made available to the public.
This year, Watson – who is worth £35 million – will be seen in two films: The Circle, alongside Tom Hanks, and Beauty and the Beast.
