Ill-famous Reddit interim CEO Ellen Pao succumbs to online petition calling for her resignation as Reddit post announced she stepped down on Friday. Reddit’s original CEO and one of its founders, Steve Huffman, was disclosed as her replacement.
“We are thankful for Ellen’s many contributions to Reddit and technology industry generally. She brought focus to chaos, recruited a world-class team of executives and drove growth,” Reddit post said. Contrary to how Pao was depicted by netizens, Reddit never failed to appreciate her role in the online community’s growth as it was the good side of her that was highlighted professionally.
“She brought a face to Reddit that changed perceptions, and is a pioneer for women in the tech industry,” the post continued. Though she resigned from her post, Pao remains to be an important figure in Reddit’s business for the entire year.
“She will remain as an advisor to the board through the end of 2015,” the post assured Pao’s loyalists. Though the post did not mention on future plans of Reddit for Pao beyond 2015, the next line ekes out optimism. “I look forward to seeing the great things she does beyond that.”
Huffman’s re-appointment as the CEO brought much delight to Reddit community. “Product and community are the two legs of Reddit, and the board was very focused on finding a candidate who excels at both, which Steve does,” the post said.
Reddit was Huffman’s baby when he co-founded the site with Alexis Ohanian, after graduating from University of Virginia. According to the post, Huffman will reunite with Ohanian.
‘You Are What Makes Reddit Great’
The latter part of the post unfolded with recognition of how crucial the moderators play their role at Reddit.
“Mods, you are what makes Reddit great. The Reddit team, now with Steve wants to do more for you. You deserve moderation tools and better communication from the admins,” the post said reassuringly. Earlier, moderators shut down hundreds of subreddits to protest on Victoria Taylor’s resignation, which moderators initially understood as “termination.”
In a statement released by their lawyers however, moderators expounded that the issue goes beyond Reddit. Besides the moderators, the redditors were also mentioned in the post, saying they, too, deserve clarity on what Reddit’s future content policy. “The team will create guidelines to both preserve the integrity of Reddit and to maintain Reddit as the place where the most open and honest conversations with the entire world can happen,” the post said, as if to hush a crying child deprived of a lollipop.
