Donald Trump Takes Another Golf Trip, White House Defends Him

During the recent months, one thing has been made clear: President Donald Trump loves golf. Perhaps his love for the sport is greater than that of the presidents before him. In the past few weeks, Trump has turned to golf (or at least, situated himself near a golf course) to reportedly get things done. The White House even said, “Just because you go somewhere doesn’t necessarily mean that you did that.”

Playing golf is nothing new to American presidents. In fact, it’s the sport they have always enjoyed playing, whether it’s a Democrat or a Republican occupying the White House. However, golf has been the subject of recent scrutiny due to Trump’s constant criticism of former President Barack Obama.

Trump once took a jab at Obama and his golfing habit in 2014, saying, “Can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf. Worse than Carter.” Tweets like this continued pretty much throughout Obama’s presidency.

Today, the Golf Digest reports that Trump has already made his 11th trip to the golf course in the past eight weeks. CNN reports that the president has gone to the area for five of the last seven weekends. He also visited the Trump International Golf Course and Trump National Golf Course 10 times during his first two months as POTUS. Both courses are located near his Mar-a-Lago estate. In contrast, Obama didn’t play his first golf round as president until the last week of April 2009.

White House: Trump isn’t always playing golf.

However, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that Trump does not always play golf when he’s on the golf course. “How you use the game of golf is something that he has talked about,” he explained. Spicer also pointed out that Trump had once used golf to “foster deeper” ties with Japan Prime Minister Shinzō Abe.

Trump’s golf trips are too expensive for the American people.

Whether or not Trump is getting business done on the course, the American people still have good reason to be concerned. According to estimates, the trips to Mar-a-Lago are reportedly not cheap. In fact, TIME wrote that each trip to the “Winter White House” costs $3 million in American tax money. So maybe Trump should play golf less, or do less business with golf.
