Police seem baffled by the mysterious deaths of a couple, whose bodies were found alongside a Florida highway on New Year’s Eve. Three young children were found sitting safely in a SUV parked nearby.
Authorities have identified the couple as Daniel Kelsey, 32, and Heather Kelsey, 30.
The three boys found inside the parked SUV are the couple’s children, according to a statement by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
A Florida Highway Patrol trooper, who was making a round early Saturday, spotted a vehicle parked along Interstate 4 near DeLand. The SUV had its hazard light blinking, according to a NY Post report.
When the trooper approached the vehicle, he found the two unconscious bodies of a couple.
He also found three young children sitting safely inside the vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies later identified the boys as belonging to the Ormond Beach couple.
The discovery was made around 2 A.M. Saturday. Both parents were pronounced dead at the scene.
The boys were taken to a hospital for precaution, Gant confirmed later.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s friend Jerrell Jackson has described the 32-year-old as a loving and devoted father who would do anything for his kids.
“I loved Dan like a brother … every time you saw him, you saw his kids,” Jackson added, as reported by News Journal.
“Unbelievable. This is so unreal,” he said.
From The Sheriff’s Office
As told by the Sheriff’s spokesperson Gary Davidson, the vehicle had no obvious signs of damage. He also added that the couple’s three children, aged between 8 months and 4 years, were unharmed inside.
“There was no obvious signs of trauma that would immediately explain the cause of death or what happened,” Davidson said.
Authorities are currently awaiting autopsy results of the deceased couple.
As reported by CBS News, investigators have not yet determined as to why the couple exited the vehicle. That being said, no evidence of foul play has been found so far.
Police are currently treating the case as unexplained but non-suspicious.
