The biggest dance show on TV, “Dancing with the Stars” season 21, returned with a big bang on ABC. The 2-night premiere started on September 14 with returning hosts Erin Andrews and Tom Bergeron. They were joined by judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Julianna Hough – minus long-time judge Len Goodman.
The episode opened with the most fabulous number on renowned Hollywood Boulevard – the biggest in DWTS history! The “all-new star-studded cast” according to ABC includes Bindi Irwin, Nick Carter, Chaka Khan, Hayes Grier, Gary Busey and more!
Here are the highlights of the premiere night.
The audience went crazy when Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough performed the Jive to Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock.” Bindi was enthralling as she entertained the crowd with a high-energy routine that convinced the judges to give her triple 8s.
Gary Busey and Anna Trebunskaya danced the Cha Cha to “Dancing in the Street” by David Bowie and Mick Jagger which was enjoyable enough to earn him three 5s.
American hero, Alek Skarlatos and his dance partner, Lindsay Arnold, amazed Carrie Ann and the crowd with their Foxtrot routine for Afrojack featuring Wrabel’s “Ten Feet Tall.” Skarlatos admitted earlier that he did not dance much before joining DWTS. His first attempt got him an 8 from Carrie Ann and a couple of 7s from other judges.
Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess ended the debut performances with a Cha Cha number to Flo Rida featuring Robin Thicke’s “I Don’t Like It, I Love It.” M Live wrote earlier that “the odds makers are putting Nick Carter at the top with Paula Deen and Gary Busey tied for last” for the first episode. The Nick Carter prediction did happen as Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess performed a superb routine that prompted the judges to give them three 8s – a tie with Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough for top score of the night.
Other performances shown were from other casts Alexa PenaVega and Mark Ballas to “Whistle (While You Work It)” by Katy Tiz; Andy Grammer and Allison Holker to “Marvin Gaye” by Charlie Puth ft. Meghan Trainor; a high-energy Jive for Carlos PenaVega and Witney Carson to “I Got You (I Feel Good)” by James Brown; Chaka Khan & Keo Motsepe to “I Feel For You” by Chaka Khan; Hayes Grier and Emma Slater to “Cheerleader” by Omi; Kim Zolciak Biermann & Tony Dovolani to “Hey Mama” by David Guetta ft. Nicki Minaj, Afrojack & Bebe Rexha; Paula Deen & Louis van Amstel to Carol Welsman’s “Hey Good Lookin'”; Tamar Braxton & Valentin Chmerkovskiy to “Do Your Thing” by Basement Jaxx; and Victor Espinoza & Karina Smirnoff to “G.D.F.R.” by Flo Rida.
All teams will return for Week 2 of Dancing with the Stars Season 21 on September 21, Monday 8 p.m. on ABC.
