Netflix’s period drama “The Crown” will reportedly dwell on Prince Philips many affairs and how he and Queen Elizabeth tried their hardest to keep their marriage working. The new series is set to premiere on American television on Friday, Nov.4.
“The Crown” is based on the life of the Queen Elizabeth. It is reportedly the most expensive period drama to date made with a budget of 100 million pounds (around $150 million).
Queen Elizabeth will be played by Claire Foy, while Prince Philip will be none other than Matt Smith. “This story reveals the political rivalries and romance behind Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped the 2nd half of the 20th century,” according to a synopsis of “The Crown.”
“This is a couple for whom divorce was not an option,” said show creator Peter Morgan. He was talking about the relation between the queen and her husband of 68 years, during Netflix panel discussion at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Variety reports.
How Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth, which affected her relationship with her husband Prince Philip will be seen in “The Crown.” It was in 1952 that Elizabeth became queen, which was just five years after her royal wedding in 1947.
The British period drama will explore Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s marriage, as its main storyline. The couple’s life became complicated after Prince Philip became Duke of Edinburgh.
The prince, for the rest of his life was forced to walk two steps behind his wife. According to Morgan, the royal family is “very, very aware of Netflix’s new drama.” He added that they were “very nervous and very excited” about “The Crown.”
Once the series starts airing in November, it is likely to bring out skeletons in the cupboards. The 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh and his rumored “numerous affairs” are well known, Celebrity Dirty Laundry reports.
The former Greek prince reportedly had an extra-marital affair with Queen Elizabeth’s cousin Princess Alexandra of Kent. Some courtiers at Buckingham Palace think the queen may have knowledge of Prince Philip’s affairs, but has chosen to turn a blind eye.
