The Cleveland Cavaliers just ended their title drought and ended the city’s misery in June. Fast forward to July, the defending champions are facing tough decisions in their bid to successfully defend the title next season.
Why Trade Kevin Love
Kevin Love is still continuously being mentioned in trade rumors over the past several weeks. It is not a surprise, though, since most fans are now pushing for the Cavs to make moves to thwart the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors earned the ire of most fans after acquiring Kevin Durant. Love struggled big time against the Warriors last season. With Durant moving to the Bay Area, King James Gospel argued the Cavaliers should now consider trading Love if they want to win the title again next season.
Love To Boston Celtics
In the event Cavaliers general manager David Griffin decide to shop Love, several teams are expected to burn Cleveland’s phone line. But among the teams interested in Love, the Boston Celtics are tipped favorites to land the All-Star power forward.
The report said the Cavaliers should consider moving Love in exchange for a package involving Jae Crowder, Marcus Smart and Jonas Jerebko. Losing Love will hurt the Cavaliers on the offensive end of the floor, but could help them in the long run with Crowder, Smart and Jerebko on deck.
Cleveland Get Their Own Small Ball Lineup
If the trade is consummated, the Cavaliers are expected to start Jae Crowder either as small forward or power forward. He will team up with LeBron James and Tristan Thompson on the frontcourt, giving the Cavaliers a versatile combination on both ends of the floor.
Smart, the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, could also provide a huge lift off the bench. The former Oklahoma State standout just turned 22 in March, which means he could eventually become a solid starter for Cleveland in the future.
On the other hand, Jerebko will be among Cleveland’s solid role players. He is expected to do the dirty similar to the roles of Iman Shumpert, Richard Jefferson, Mike Dunleavy and Channing Frye.
Celtics Finally Get Love
As for the Celtics, they will finally get the power forward that they have been chasing since Love’s days with the Minnesota Timberwolves. While they will lose a future asset in Smart and a solid defender in Crowder, they will form a solid frontcourt, featuring Love and veteran big man Al Horford.
Things could get more exciting in Boston if they successfully acquire Russell Westbrook the Oklahoma City Thunder. Bleacher Report revealed the Thunder will likely move Westbrook, with the Celtics as his likely landing spot. They could also sign Westbrook as a free agent next summer if they fail to strike a trade before the new season.
