Chipotle is getting ready to serve dessert. And the best part about it? It is decadent and fried.
During a recent earnings conference call, the restaurant chain unveiled its plans to offer a dessert item soon. In fact, it is planning to test out the new offering at a number of its restaurants later this month.
Bunuelos traditionally bring good luck.
Based on the earnings call, the plan is to introduce its own take on the popular Mexican sweet treat, bunuelos. Bunuelos are popular among various Latin American countries. According to What’s Cooking America, this traditional treat is typically served during special occasions, whether it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving, baptisms, birthdays and other holidays. It is believed that eating bunuelos would bring people good luck.
Bunuelos are sometimes recognized as a “Mexican Popover.” They can appear like deep fried doughnut holes that have been rolled in cinnamon sugar. In the case of Chipotle, however, NBC reports that Chipotle is coming out with a version made with the restaurant’s tortilla chips. As a dessert item, they will be fried with some honey, sugar and cinnamon. These will then be served with an apple caramel butter dipping sauce on the side.
The company believes that offering these bunuelos for dessert should be manageable since it does not require any extra equipment. “The buñuelos are simple to make using our existing equipment and require us to add just a few additional ingredients. They’re delicious and complement our menu nicely,” Chipotle founder and chairman explained during the call.
This marks the first time that Chipotle will venture onto dessert items. Recently the company had announced that it is making its food a whole lot more wholesome by sticking to whole ingredients and removing any preservatives, additives or artificial coloring. Among the food items Chipotle modified immediately is its tortilla.
“Making delicious tortillas with just a few real, whole ingredients has always been an important goal for us,” Chipotle explained in a statement. “So, we’re proud to announce that our tortilla is the final item on our menu to now be made with only real ingredients.”
Chipotle’s tortilla ingredients have become wholesome recently.
According to the company, their old flour tortilla recipe contained a number of unwanted ingredients. These included sodium acid pyrophosphate, monocalcium phosphate, fumaric acid, calcium propionate, sodium metabisulfite, potassium sorbate, guar gum and distilled monoglycerides. Recently, Chipotle modified its tortilla recipe so that it’s now made with just five ingredients. These are wheat flour, water, canola oil, yeast and salt.
This is how you know that Chipotle’s bunuelos would also be one of the most wholesome desserts you can enjoy at a fast food restaurant.
