A 16-year-old Chinese exchange student on her way to school was slashed in the face with a box cutter on Wednesday, authorities said.
The student had been walking east on 13th Avenue near 147th Street at around 8:20 p.m. when the attacker, a man wearing gloves and a surgical mask, came from behind her and slashed her face. One of the lacerations was from her ear till her throat. The victim was slashed “once from the ear to her throat, the middle of her throat, and another part of her face as well,” NYPD detective chief Robert Boyce said.
He added, “Once he slashed her, he ran off to parts unknown.”
The student underwent surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and is reportedly in stable condition, according to NBC New York. The assailant and the victim, who has been in the United States for eight months, did not seem to know one another.
The student’s aunt said that the victim was only a few minutes from reaching her school. “There was so much blood,” she said, as reported by New York Post. “We hope he gets caught.”
The attacker has not been identified as of yet. In a video footage of the incident, his face is not visible because of the hoodie he was wearing.
