Three incidents, explosions in Manhattan and New Jersey and a stabbing incident in Minnesota, occurred in a period of 12 hours. These incidents are currently being investigated by the authorities.
No links have been found between the explosions in Chelsea that injured 29, another explosion along the route of a race in Seaside Park, New Jersey, and a stabbing incident in a St. Cloud, Minnesota mall.
According to investigators, mobile flip phones were used as triggering devices in the explosions. The New York Post reports that a similar kind of device was discovered in an unexploded pressure cooker bomb a few blocks from the site of the Manhattan explosion.
Officials believe the same person planted all three bombs. The messages from the person behind the attacks, posted on the Tumblr page “I’m the NY Bomber” have been deleted. The messages revealed that the attacks were a response to anti-gay “violence and oppression.”
“I did it because I cannot stand society,” one of the messages read. “I cannot live in a world where homosexuals like myself as well as the rest of the LGBTQ+ community are looked down upon by society.”
“This is not the end, this is just the beginning,” the writer said.
While no direct links have been established between Saturday night’s bombing and international terrorism, authorities said the attacks were intentional.
“At this time there’s no evidence of an international terrorism connection with this incident, but it is very, very early in the investigation, and it’s just starting,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.
As reported by the Washington Post, the same type of bomb was used in both explosions. “When you see the amount of damage, we really were very lucky there were no fatalities,” Cuomo said.
An unexploded device, which appeared to be a pressure cooker with wiring, was discovered a few blocks away soon after the explosion. Pressure cookers were used in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.
“[The state is deploying 1,000 additional police and National Guard troops] just to err on the side of caution,” Cuomo said. “I want New Yorkers to be confident when they go back to work on Monday that New York is up and running and we’re doing everything that we need to do.”
On Saturday, a stabbing incident in the St. Cloud, Minnesota, mall caused injuries to nine people. The attacker was shot to death by an off duty officer. Investigators are looking for possible links between the three incidents.
