Elon Musk announced a bunch of upgrades for Tesla Model S.
Part of the upgrades he was talking about was a boost to the high-performing version of Tesla S. Called the Ludicrous Mode, it’s set to make a Tesla S do a 0-60 in about 2.8 seconds. This is a cut from the crazy record of 3.2 seconds.
In his announcement, Musk emphasized in his terms that the mode was an outcome of the improvement in the smart use for the battery.
“Instead of a standard fuse that just melts past a certain amperage, requiring a big gap between the normal operating current and max current, we developed a fuse with its own electronics and a tiny lithium-ion battery. It constantly monitors current at the millisecond level and is pyro-actuated to cut power with extreme precision and certainty.
That was combined with upgrading the main pack contactor to use inconel (a high temperature space-grade superalloy) instead of steel, so that it remains springy under the heat of heavy current. The net result is that we can safely increase the max pack output from 1300 to 1500 Amps,” he wrote.
The result is a staggering 10% improvement in the 0-60 mph time down to just 2.8 seconds. Quite a feat.

The new improvement will come with a prize, of course. It’s an additional $10k for the new customers. For the existing P85D owners, however, the package will be half the prize plus labor fees.
According to Business Insider, Musk also said that Model X will also have the Ludicrous Mode, but being of a heavier built, will have a slower speed, through retaining the possible title of being “the fastest SUV on planet Earth.”
