Carmelo Anthony can’t wait to play alongside Derrick Rose. He thinks the New York Knicks will be a better team with the one-time league MVP on the roster.
In a press conference this week, Anthony told reporters that he has never played with a top talent like Rose. He believes the former Chicago Bulls star would make his life a lot easier on the court.
“To play alongside an explosive guy like Derrick, someone who can pick the pace up, who can push the pace throughout the course of the game, someone who’s a threat at that position,” Anthony said, via ESPN. “I think for me, the only thing that I can do is go out there and play basketball and enjoy playing basketball again and having fun with the game.”
Even with Rose on the team, Anthony knows he still needs to put up huge numbers to help the Knicks post a winning record next season. He accepts the challenge and encourages his teammates to be the best that they can be.
Anthony, Rose and the rest of the Knicks have started scrimmaging together at the team’s indoor facility in Manhattan. The nine-time All-Star stated that he likes what he has seen from his teammates, especially from Rose.
“He’s extremely focused right now,” said Anthony. “He’s healthy, he has a different mindset, he has a clear mind and he’s ready to go and try to help us with our goals.”
Despite questions about his overall durability, Rose managed to play 66 games last season. In his final year with the Bulls, he tallied 16.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest, Basketball Reference reported.
Rose told NBA.com that playing for the Knicks will be a totally different experience for him. He can now play through someone else rather than carrying the team by himself. He can defer to Anthony or Kristaps Porzingis, as well as hit the open shooter when the defense collapses on him.
