BlackBerry Adds More Features to BBM App

BlackBerry has updated its BBM messaging app for Android and iOS users. The Canadian smartphone manufacturer has just fulfilled its promise to bring more features to the two versions of its popular messaging app. This move is expected to further boost the popularity of the apps.

BBM for Android and iOS became controversial last year after the company failed in a few attempts to launch both apps. BlackBerry was able to finally release BBM for the two mobile operating systems in October after a delay in an earlier schedule for release. Immediately after the roll out, the app topped the free app rankings of the Apple Inc’s App Store, with over 10 million downloads within just 24 hours after launch.

Original BBM features

As mentioned, BBM for Android and iOS now has added interesting and helpful features. On the top of the list is BM Voice, which facilitates free voice calls to all the BBM contacts of the user over data or Wi-Fi connection. This feature used to be an exclusive privilege to BlackBerry users since December 2012.

BBM for Android and iOS users could now get access to BBM Channels, which is a social network that facilitates following of brands and people. This feature was launched in beta version in May last year and was finally released initially to all BlackBerry devices last November.

New features for all platforms

Before BBM users in BlackBerry devices feel left out, the company also made sure the recent update would bring about several more interesting newfeatures for them as well. All BBM-supported platforms could now share documents, photographs, and voice notes with just one click.

The built-in Dropbox support feature makes it easier to send even large files like videos and presentations. Sending could be from a user’s personal cloud account directly to any BBM contact. On the other hand, files that are received could be saved directly as well into the user’s smartphone. Alternatively, those files could be added to a Dropbox account.

Another feature enables sharing of actual location within a specified duration with other BM contacts. This one is coursed through the Glympse app. It would help make it much easier for users to keep tabs on their friends especially when there is a need to disclose locations. Lastly, the latest update brought over 100 new emoticons to BBM to further make communications easier and more fun.
