Wedding bells will ring on Season 9 of “The Big Bang Theory” as Penny and Leonard get hitched on tonight’s premiere at CBS, Fox News updates.
The premiere episode “The Matrimonial Momentum” shows lovers Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) embarking on the most important journey of their lives as they get hitched in Las Vegas. While Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) are still not back together after breaking up in the Season 8 finale.
Executive producer Steve Molaro stated in an interview that Sheldon and Amy will not “make up by the end” of the episode.” He also added, “It’s rough on both of them. I think [it’s] like a divorce in the beginning and it’s yet another thing that Sheldon and Amy and all seven of them need to navigate separately and as a group.”
Penny and Lenny’s marriage will not be “exactly happily ever after” as he confessed to having kissed Mandy, another woman, on his North Sea expedition a couple of years ago.
“The show is moving forward in big brave ways and so are Leonard and Penny,” executive producer Steve Molaro told Entertainment Weekly.
“People have rocky patches in their lives — Sheldon and Amy and Leonard and Penny and you can either give up or you can work on them,” Molaro continued. “I would say, for both couples, sometimes things need to get worse before they get better.”
Now that Sheldon and Amy have gone their own separate ways, Sheldon will play the third wheel on the newlyweds as he moves out to live with them. Third-wheeling continues as Howard (Simon Helberg) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) feel bad about kicking Stuart out on his birthday.
Penny’s last name is still not revealed during the marriage ceremony, though, but Molaro himself said that “her last name is Hofstadter!”
“The Big Bang Theory” premieres tonight Monday at 8:00 p.m. on CBS.
