Ben Carson has drawn criticism over his recent remarks about guns, and the latest one about how Jews could have avoided the Holocaust if they had arms was no different.
Speaking with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, the Republican presidential candidate said that the Holocaust could have been “greatly diminished” if the Jews were armed. “I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed,” Carson said. “I’m telling you there is a reason these dictatorial people take guns first.”
Carson’s remarks echo the statements from his new book, “A Perfect Union,” wherein he writes that “through a combination of removing guns and disseminating propaganda, the Nazis were able to carry out their evil intentions with relatively little resistance.”

However, Carson’s remarks were met with criticism from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), who cited historical inaccuracy in his comments. “The small number of personal firearms available to Germany’s Jews in 1938 could in no way have stopped the totalitarian power of the Nazi German state,” Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL national director, said, ABC News reports.
When Carson was asked Thursday about how school shootings can be prevented in light of the shooting at the Umpqua Community College where nine people were killed, he said that if he was approached by the Oregon gunman he would have handled things in a different manner. “Not only would I probably not cooperate with him, I would not just stand there and let him shoot me,” Carson said. “I would say, ‘Hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.’”
He also said that as a parent, he would be “much more comfortable” if there were more guns in schools. “If I had a little kid in kindergarten somewhere,” he said, “I would feel much more comfortable if I knew on that campus there was a police officer or somebody who was trained with a weapon. If the teacher was trained in the use of that weapon and had access to it, I would be much more comfortable if they had one than if they didn’t.”
