It was supposed to be a night of pomp and laughter during Bastille Day in Nice. But a truck had driven through the crowd of revelers, leaving a number of people dead on the streets. At least 60 people are said to have been killed in the incident.
Everywhere in the streets, people were running as they tried to escape the truck that was plowing through the crowd. The truck was said to have driven at high speed through the famous Promenade des Anglais seafront before hitting the crowd indiscriminately.
As the attack unfolded, local mayor Christian Estrosi appealed to Nice residents saying, “Dear Nicois, the driver of a truck appears to have killed dozens of people. Stay at home for the time being. More news to follow.”
According to a report from Reuters, regional sub-prefect Sebastien Humbert told France Info radio that the driver of the truck was been shot and killed by the police. The male driver is yet to be identified. It is unclear what his motives were for the mass killing.
Meanwhile, Nice-Matin, a regional publication, published a photo of a long-distance delivery truck that has been shot by a number of bullets. It appears to be the truck that had plowed through the crowd earlier. The number of casualties and injured victims from the incident remains unclear as of the moment.
The incident happened hours after French President Francois Hollande said it will not extend the state of emergency put in place following the deadly attacks in Paris last November.
“We can’t extend the state of emergency indefinitely, it would make no sense,” he explained. The state of emergency is due to expire on July 26.
As more information surface about the tragedy, more heartbreaking photos have also made it to national headlines. One of these is a photo of what looked to be a kid, beside her is her baby doll. “Defies all reason. No matter what your beliefs, how can anyone be this depraved and indifferent to human life? So broken,”reads one comment about the photo.
