America Ferrera teased about the possibility of an “Ugly Betty” revival project, but its success lies in the hands of Hulu.
While talking to reporters at “Ugly Betty’s” reunion panel during the ATX TV Festival on Saturday, the 32-year-old actress joked about the comeback of the hit ABC TV series, Page Six reported.
“Hulu’s going to pick us up for a two-hour special,” she opened her spiel, which later on became serious when she encouraged the audience to tweet about bringing back the show by using popularizing the hashtag #HuluBringBackUglyBetty.
According to Variety, Ferrera noted at first that what she announced about the “Ugly Betty” revival was a joke, but she eventually pointed out that it could actually turn into reality with everybody’s help.
“That’s not true, but if you tweet it…Everybody here take out your phone,” she exclaimed. “Hashtag: Betty Reboot. We need a hashtag and tweet it out and then we’re going to get Hulu to buy a two-hour special.”
Meanwhile “Ugly Betty” creator Silvio Horta said, “Here’s the only thing I know for sure — if we were to do something, it would be a dream, but everybody on this stage would have to be involved. And Becki Newton.”
Ferrera, on the other hand, exclaimed, “I mean, it took 20 minutes for everyone to say yes to my email to be at ATX!”
As the “Ugly Betty” revival pitch of Ferrera appeared to be a joke, this did sit well among its fans who commented on the story of Variety.
“I would love an ‘Ugly Betty’ movie,” one reader wrote. “I never missed an episode, and cried when it went off.”
“I’d love to see a movie of this with the original cast,” another commented.
Some other fans seemed excited to have heard the idea from the lead star herself, “Yes! Yes! Yes! Would love more stories about Betty!”
“Ugly Betty” ran on ABC from 2006 until 2010.
