Amazon Unveils Its Chromecast Competitor “Fire TV Stick”

Amazon Unveils Its Chromecast CompetitorAmazon has officially released its contender in the home media streaming arena – the Fire TV Stick which is set to go head-to-head against Google’s Chromecast.

Like its Google counterpart, the Fire TV Stick gives users access to video and music streaming services like Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, NBA Game Time, Twitch, SHOWTIME ANYTIME, Prime Music, Spotify, Pandora, Vevo, Plex, A&E, PBS, PBS KIDS, WATCH Disney Channel, YouTube.com, and more. Amazon is also set to one up its competition by leveraging the company’s Amazon Instant Video service which will give Fire TV Stick users access to over 200,000 TV show episodes and movies for rent or purchase.

The Fire TV Stick features the same user interface as the company’s Fire TV hub which can be controlled using the invluded remote control. It can also be maneuvered with the user’s phone or tablet with the free Fire TV Remove App which also features Voice Search. Users will be able to ‘fling’ media from their tablets or phones to their Fire TV Stick and also be able to access additional information about the show or movie they’re watching using the X-Ray feature. And like the Chromecast, users will be able to mirror their phone or tablet display onto their TVs via the Fire TV Stick.

Internally, the Fire TV Stick is powered by a dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. Also, the Fire TV Stick is equipped with a more powerful dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi which is double of what the Chromecast has.

“Fire TV Stick is the most powerful streaming media stick available—a dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, dual-band and dual-antenna Wi-Fi, included remote control, voice search with our free mobile app, easy set-up, an open ecosystem, and exclusive features like ASAP for instant streaming,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO.

The Fire TV Stick is now available for pre-order at Amazon.com for $39 which is $4 more expensive than the Chromecast. Additionally, for the next two days Amazon Prime members can get the Fire TV Stick for only $19 on Amazon.com. Lastly, interested buyers may also upgrade the included remote to the Fire TV Voice Remote for only $29.99.
