Amazon has just announced the company’s 7th generation Kindle – the Kindle Voyage – which features a whole new design and a slew of new features.
“Our mission with Kindle is to make the device disappear, so you can lose yourself in the author’s world,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “Kindle Voyage is the next big step in this mission. With the thinnest design, highest resolution and highest contrast display, reimagined page turns, and all of the features that readers love about Kindle—books in seconds, no eyestrain or glare, readability in bright sunlight, and battery life measured in weeks, not hours—Kindle Voyage is crafted from the ground up for readers.”
The Kindle Voyage, which the company is calling its most advanced e-reader, features an all-new design that includes an almost full glass front panel and a magnesium rear cover. The Voyage measures only 7.6mm thin and weighs less than 6.4 ounces which makes it the thinnest Kindle the company has ever made. It also features new Paperwhite display with a higher contrast, a higher pixel density of 300 pixels per inch, and a flush front micro-etched glass cover to diffuse light and prevent glare. The display also features a new adaptive front light that’s 39% brighter and automatically adjusts depending on the surrounding lighting conditions. Additionally, the adaptive front light automatically dims over time to compensate for the user’s eyes natural eye darkness adjustment.
Amazon has also removed the buttons on the bezel with the new Kindle Voyage and has replaced them with what the company calls PagePress which is a set of sensors hidden under the bezel of the device that lets the users flip pages by just simply applying a bit of pressure to the bezel with their finger. The PagePress technology will also respond to page turns with tactile feedback via the device’s haptic actuator. The sensitivity of the
sensors and the strength of the haptic feedback are both customizable by the user. Lastly, the Kindle Voyage comes with free 3G in over 100 countries courtesy of Amazon.
The Kindle Voyage is available for pre-order starting today at an SRP of $199 and will begin shipping sometime in October.
