Get ready Jordan Brand aficionados. The Air Jordan 31 will release in the “Shattered Backboard” colorway next weekend.
The starfish motif pays homage to Michael Jordan’s rim-rattling debut in the international stage. The colors are inspired from the team jersey Jordan wore during a Nike exhibition game in Italy. That fateful day in 1985, Jordan famously broke the backboard while dunking on a fast break.
The Air Jordan 31 “Shattered Backboard” is clad in black and orange on its Flyweave and synthetic leather upper. It features a neoprene inner sleeve with anatomical pillows for the heel and ankles.
According to Schwollo, the Flyweave upper on the Air Jordan 31 is softer than the Flyweave upper on the Air Jordan 30. The knitted material on the front two-thirds of the sneakers follows the shape of the toes. The synthetic leather on the heel offers extra support during quick movements.
Jordan Brand’s latest flagship model is equipped with the FlightSpeed cushioning technology. Full-length Zoom Air is carved into the midsole to provide well-rounded impact protection.
The Air Jordan 31 “Shattered Backboard” is packed with branding. The Jumpman logo can be found on the heel, insole and outsole of the sneakers. The Nike swoosh is on the medial and lateral sides while the classic Wings logo is placed on the medial collar.
Sneaker junkie Jacques Slade compared the tooling of the Air Jordan 31 to the Air Jordan 1. The former is a modern spin on the iconic 1985 silhouette.
“Why bring them back for almost thirty years? Well, that speaks to the concept and vision behind the Air Jordan 31,” said Slade. “They’ve taken the shoe back to where it started from, but thinking about it in forms of style and technology of today.”
The Air Jordan 31 “Shattered Backboard” will hit online shelves on October 8. Men’s sizes will cost $200.
