Age Checks On Porn Sites In 2018

The United Kingdom government has recently signed a bill that enforces age checks on porn sites by 2018. Internet users, especially from the UK, would need to use a legal document that confirms their age to bypass the age check. For now, we’ve yet to know if this will affect all porn site regulars globally.

According to BBC, the Digital Economy Act will enforce the age check blocks in an effort to make the internet safer for children. Age checks sound like a minor inconvenience but they will be asked to provide credit card details to prove the authenticity of their age. Companies and sites that are required to have age checks for their content will be blocked in the UK.

So far, the bill is agreeable in terms of its security benefits for the children. The UK already has two regulatory boards for film and video games, namely the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and Pan European Game Information (PEGI). The Digital Economy Act would give birth to one new European media regulatory board as the act also asks one to make this work.

However, all acts and laws to regulate internet content and use have been welcomed by users. Previously, the Stop Online Piracy Act, Protect IP Act, and the current net neutrality talks have been resisted. Even though these acts do aim to regulate the internet, the public seems to focus on keeping the internet free from any form of control that could be abused in the long run.

For now, this new UK act may mean nothing to internet users in other countries. However, this might force some porn sites to have a universal age check gate that affects any user that attempts to access their content. We’ve yet to see the full enforcement of the Digital Economy Act until April 2018.
