Rebekah Gregory DiMartino was among the victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. She was standing near the finish line when the bombs exploded.
Over the next year, she underwent numerous surgeries, most of them concentrating on her left leg, since it was the most affected after the incident.
Although none of the operations were successful – she had to amputate her leg and substitute it with a prosthetic one – she participated in the 2014 tribute run in a wheelchair.
Rebekah wrote on her Facebook page, “This time I won’t be laying on the ground in pieces, or having to be assisted because I can’t do things on my own.
“This time…the only thing hitting the ground will be my running shoe, as I show myself and the rest of the world that I am back, stronger than ever….and there is NO stopping me now.”
She even posted a breakup letter to her left leg a day before her amputation and gave a birth announcement for her new prosthetic leg. She christened her new leg Felicia.
According to ABC News, she began her training a week before her leg amputation in November last year. Since the surgery, she has been training on her prosthetic leg at her home five days a week to improve her durability.
She said, “It is the best decision I have ever made for myself.
“I am doing normal things again. I took my son to the movies the other day. I walk through the airport and I don’t have to use a wheelchair. And if I am in jeans nobody can even tell that I have a prosthetic leg.”
Although she wanted to run the entire stretch of 26.2 miles, she was told last week by her doctors that doing so will end up causing her more harm. And so, she had to contend with running the last three miles of the event, according to espnW.
She said, “I had to compromise, which I am not very good at doing sometimes.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. When I crossed the finish line, I got my life back today.”
Three people were killed and 264 were injured in the Boston Marathon bombings that occurred on April 15 2013. The Tsarnaev brothers, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan, were found responsible for planting the bombs. Tamerlan was killed in the four-day manhunt that followed the incident, while Dzhokhar has been convicted and now faces a trial sentence.
